This course provides the skills to safely operate, maintain, and store a chainsaw. Learners gain hands‑on experience in risk assessment, pre‑start checks, cross‑cutting timber, and equipment care. Successful participants receive a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Chainsaw Operations. This course is fully funded by The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

Description
Learners who successfully complete this Programme will:
- Carry out risk assessment for chainsaw operations including maintenance operations and sawing operations
- Describe the maintenance requirements of a chainsaw
- Outline the safe operation of a chainsaw during use including interpreting safety decals, safety devices fitted to the chainsaw and cross cutting operations
- Explain the considerations of timber under strain including tension and compression
- Safely maintain a chainsaw as specified in the operator's manual
- Carry out routine chainsaw pre-starting checks specified in the operator's manual
- Start and check the chainsaw for correct operation
- Crosscut timber to required lengths including timber less than the cutting bar length and timber greater than the cutting bar length
- Prepare a chainsaw for storage including cleaning, sharpening, and setting
Facilities Required
- The course will be conducted in a classroom for theory with designated work areas for practical sessions
- Selection of logs provided 6-9” (125mm to 225mm) & 600 mm diameter.
- 5L of petrol and 2 stroke oil mix, chain oil.
- Work bench under cover from elements for maintenance, each learner to bring along a chainsaw.
- Participants must bring chainsaw safety boots, chainsaw trousers/chaps, chainsaw gloves, and a forestry helmet with visor and ear defenders. Learners without the required PPE will not be permitted to take part in the practical chainsaw exercises.
Assessment & Renewal
The learner is required to complete - Skills Demonstration 60% and Theory/Oral Exam 40%
Learners who are successful on this Programme may carry forward a credit towards a major award in the future.
Learners must achieve a min of a Pass grade in the skills demonstration to achieve the award
Certification / Accreditation
Successful applicants will receive a QQI level 5 Certificate in Chainsaw Operations
